BACKYARD CREW

Backyard Crew consists of young artists from Khayelitsha and its surrounding municipal areas who, like many in other neglected townships, have dreams. Not dreams of lavish lifestyles and hyped publicity, but dreams to tell their own stories without distortion, exaggeration; with no stunts and no wires: the truth. They are not disillusioned by realities that surround and affect them on a daily basis. Instead they have sought for and found ways and means to tell their stories. They are observers of social activities, authors of breathtaking lyrics, reciters of immense tales, and maestros of amazing punch lines.

They have grown as lyricists within the maturing realm of South African hip-hop, colloquially called “spaza,” hardcore hip-hop on a vernacular (Xhosa) tip. Their lyrics could even make the skull of iNkosi uHintsa nod in royal approval! Each artist expresses himself with such dexterity as the diverse beats dictate. The flows – ooh! Carefully selected sound effects accompanied by melodic piano lines are trademarks of the production. The beats – iyho!
